Living la vida latin(5)

Javier:Those are pinatas. They're a part of our Christmas 1)celebration.
Mei: Aren't they 2)made out of paper?
Javier:Yes. And they're filled with 3)treats--candy and toys and even money!
Mei: So how do you get them open?
Javier:You are 4)blindfolded and take a stick to 5)strike it with.
Mei: Sounds dangerous.
Javier:I guess it could be if you're not careful. Everyone 6)takes turns until
someone 7)busts it open.
Mei: Oh, boy. They're looking at me...

1) celebration (a.)
2) be made out of... 用…製成
3) treat (n.)
4) blindfold (v.)

EZ talk出狀況-Let You Talk

You propably have experience with insurance salespeople trying to push you into buying some kind of insurance. If you ran into one again, how would you deal with him/her? Take the next thirty seconds to try to say no to the salespeople in English!

1.Melvin's Answer:

Don't bother me.
I'm broke!
I don't need insurance!
Just don't bother me with this garbage.
Look, thanks, already. But I'm not interested.
I don't have the time to talk with you about this. Goodbye.

2.Kiki's Answer:

Thank you. I already have insurance.
I don't have any plans to buy insurance, but if something changes, I'll be in touch.
I'll talk it over with my family.
I'm afraid I have to be going. Goodbye.

At a nighttime festival

Mei: Who are the guys in the hats?
Javier:Those are mariachis. Traditional Mexican musical performers.
Mei: The music is so romantic.
Javier:And so are Latinos. Look at how they act when they're together.
Mei: And they seem so happy. And they treat everyone like family.
Javier:That's the Hispanic spirit. 1)Mi casa es tu casa. It's 2)hospitality at it's finest!
Mei: Hey! I've seen those hanging animals before!

Javier:That was merengue. It's originally from the 2)Caribbean but it's popular 3)all over.
Mei: It's a 4)workout. No wonder Hispanics have such great bodies!
Javier:Well, not always. Our food can be pretty 5)heavy depending on what you eat.
Mei: Speaking of food, I'd like to try some 6)Latin American food.

Javier:The word Hispanic means anything coming from 1)Spain. Younger, more
2)assimilated people seem to like it better.
Mei: And Latino is used by the older people?
Javier:Yeah, but both are OK here in L.A. I just say I'm a 3)Chicano, for example,
because my parents are from Mexico.
Mei: It all seems so complicated. I don't want to 4)offend anyone.
Javier:Don't worry. There's one thing we Hispanics all have in common: 5)amistad!

Latino?

Fiona: [Upset] I bought health insurance just for you today, and you're angry at me?
Hank: You...you already bought it?
Fiona: Well, I signed most of the papers. You just need to sign, and then we're set.
Hank: Is it 1)at least cheaper than what we're paying now?
Fiona: It's thirty thousand more. But most is for 2)this thing we don't need to pay much longer and...oh, we need to pay the first year's amount next month...
Hank: [To self] Someone just 3)shoot me now.

Hank: I see his 6)scare 7)tactics worked on you.

Street Talk-

當he, him, his, her與前字連音時,[h]不發音
助動詞與動詞have, has, her的[h]不發音 where, what, when, which中的[h]不發音

Greg: Susie was just here a minute ago. But she left.
Penny: Darn, I can't believe I missed her.
Greg: She said she had a lot of things to do anyway.
Penny: I know, but I really needed to talk to her about my new job.
Greg: I have her 1)cell phone number if you want it.
Penny: 2)You're a star.

1) cell phone (n.) = cellular phone

Rob: Yes, plus some. If you cancel, you'll get less back. And starting a new one now would be more expensive because of the 1)interest rates.
Fiona: [To self] I'm going to get money back! Shopping time!
Rob: Your husband is a different story. He only has a basic health policy. What's your family's total yearly income?
Fiona: My husband's the 2)primary income earner. He earns about a million a year.
Rob: I suggest you drop your old health policies and start over with us.
Fiona: What's different about your insurance?
