Let's Get Together!(3)

Taylor: Yep. Each day has a different focus, like creativity and working as a group and...
Holly: Is there a meal like Christmas dinner with turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, rolls, cranberry sauce...?
Taylor: There sure is, on day six, December 31st. A feast of African delicacies.
Holly: Hey, why do you know so much about Kwanzaa anyway?
Taylor: Remember my ex, Femi? She was from Nigeria.
Holly: That's right! No wonder you're an expert now.

1) turkey (n.)
2) feast (n.)
3) delicacy (n.)
4) Nigeria (n.)

Let's Get Together!(2)

Next morning, the doorbell rings at Holly and Yi-jun's place

Taylor:Anybody home?! Ready for a ride in a one-horse open sleigh?
Yi-jun: [Calling out] Well, aren't you in the holiday spirit! [opening the door] Taylor! What are you wearing?
Taylor:It's a traditional African outfit.
Yi-jun:OK...I guess my question really is...WHY are you wearing that?
Taylor:After Christmas at Holly's parents', I'm meeting up with a friend for Kwanzaa.
Yi-jun:But, why wear your outfit so early? You should be in an elf suit or something...

1) doorbell (n.)
What fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh(乘坐單馬無篷雪橇樂淘淘),而此處Taylor就用這句歌詞,來表示他們可以歡樂上路過佳節了
3) sleigh (n.)
4) meet up with...(口)與(某人)會合
5) Kwanzaa (n.)

Let's Get Together!(1)

On December 22nd, at an office party

Mr. Hobbs: Merry Christmas, Holly. You're standing under the mistletoe!
Holly: Oops! [kisses Mr. Hobbs] Thank you for this wonderful party, Mr. Hobbs.
Mr. Hobbs: The fun hasn't even started yet! We're drawing for an all-expenses-paid vacation! Grab a drink and some food. Don't be shy.
Holly: I will. Just let me get my coat off and put this under the tree.
Mr. Hobbs: [Playfully] Is that a gift for me?!
Holly: Hah! No, Mr. Hobbs. It's for the office pool draw.

2) draw (v.)
3) all-expenses-paid vacation
4) playfully (adv.)

John:And then you biked home?
Carlie:Naw, my friend picked me up, and we went to the movies.
John:You know, I waited for hours for you to give me a call.
Carlie:Ooh, it slipped my mind. Was I supposed to call you?

1) bike (v.)
2) slip someone's mind

Time For a Road Trip, Eh?(5)

A few hours later

Trev: Where are we? What's that noise?
Paul: This is Niagara Falls, Ontario! One of the “Seven Natural Wonders of the World”.
Trev: Yeeh-aah! Very amazing! So powerful--getting rained on in the car!
Paul: It's an awesome sight! You can see the American Falls over there. It's smaller but still very beautiful.
Trev: Look at that boat at the bottom of the Falls! Does it have a death wish?
Paul: That's the “Maid of the Mist” tour boat. It'll soak you if you go on it!
Trev: I'll bet! OK...let's go for it!

2) get rained on 被淋溼
3) death wish
4) soak (v.)
5) I'll bet.

Wei: I thought Canadians spoke French.
Paul: Uh, maybe one-third. But over eighty percent of Quebec speaks French as their mother tongue.
Wei: Cool! A little bit of France in North America!
Paul: That's what makes Canada special--the many cultures here are encouraged to keep their identities and languages.
Wei: It'll be fun to see the French way of life.
Paul: Oui-oui, Mademoiselle! In a couple of days we'll see it.

1) mother tongue 母語
2) That's what makes....
Mademoiselle (n.)

Wei: Why red and white?
Paul: These colours have been used during our history for war medals and Olympian's clothing.
Wei: Speaking of colors, why do Canadians spell it c-o-l-o-u-r-s?
Paul: That's a difference between Canadian and American English.
Wei: Canadians spell differently?
Paul: Not often. But we use “-o-u-r”, like in neighbour, labour, flavour, etc. And Canadians often say “zed”, not “zee” for the last letter of the alphabet.

1) war medal
4) alphabet (n.)

Trev: HA! “Aboot!” “Aboot!” There's your first lesson, Wei—Canadians say “aboot!”
Paul: Better than your Texan-like “abaaaaout”, Trev.
Trev: No way! You sound like some funny-talking British duke! “Oot and aboot!” “Oot and aboot!”
Paul: Canadians aren't British and, contrary to what some people think, we're not American.
Trev: Exactly! You guys don’t have a Hollywood in Canada.
Paul: OK, we don’t have Hollywood, but you may not realize how many Canadians are entertaining us all!

1) Texan-like (a.)
2) duke (n.)
3) contrary to... 與…相反
4) American (a.)
6) entertain (v.)

On the 401 highway after crossing the Ambassador Bridge

Wei: Hey! That was easy to cross the border! I just showed my passport and you guys showed I.D.
Trev: Well, it isn't always that easy--especially since September 11th.
Wei: Why is that?
Trev: The border guards have been told to strip-search people.
Wei: Why didn't we get searched then?
Trev: They can't search everyone--over half a million people travel between the two countries every day!

1) border (n.) the Canada-U.S. border

Because

Because my car broke down this morning, so I walked here.

My car broke down this morning, so I walked here.

I walked here because my car broke down this morning.

Because it takes so long to get to Canada by plane.

Because it takes so long to get to Canada by plane, we decided to go to Japan instead.
